Radhika Sharma, a Lucknowite and one of the finalists of the Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 contest is already doing the city proud. The fashion designer and marketing post graduate, has already won two coveted titles in the preliminary rounds of the prestigious contest. Radhika has been crowned Pureit Femina Miss Beauty For A Cause, in which she extended her support to the cause of providing safe and clean drinking water to everyone in the country. She also bagged the title of the Sinhgad Institute's Femina Miss Intellectual.

Telling us about how she got into the fray to being crowned the most beautiful girl in the country, Radhika says, she hadn't thought of being anything else since she was a kid. "I was about 4-5 years old and while watching all these girls sashay on the runway on TV, I would tell my mom that one day I will be like them. I was very inspired by
Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and wanted to be a Miss India."

Although Radhika misses her home and family a lot in Mumbai, where she's undergoing rigorous training for the finals to be held on Sunday, she says she's enjoying the experience. "It's an enriching experience. We're so many of us from such varied backgrounds and it's fun interacting with all of them. We all have an amazing bond inspite of being competitors."
She's also loving every bit of the training they are being imparted in the run-up to the finals. "These people work so hard to bring out the best in all of us that all the hard work we are putting in is worth every pain," she says.
Every bit a foodie, Radhika sure does miss her binging on aloo parathas and Lucknow ki chaat. "God, once I come back home, I'll stuff myself with chaat and kachoris," says she.

After being crowned Miss India, which Radhika is confident of, she says acting in films will a be a natural progression. "See, no longer are film actresses considered down market. It's a larger than life medium, which gets a girl name, fame, respect and money. So obviously, if a good offer comes my way. I will willingly accept it," she adds.
And no, Radhika's parents - mom Dr Neera Sharma and dad Pratap Bhan, both senior government officials - have no hassles in letting their daughter follow her heart. "We are a very progressive and open minded family. Radhika has done us proud. We will support her in whatever she wants to do," says mom Neera.

IMMUNISATION, THE NEED OF THE HOUR

Sanofi Pasteur India and the Miss India team came together for the 'I for Immunisation' initiative. A unique programme was conducted for students and teachers of GM International School, Mumbai to kickstart the 2013 campaign. The activities included an educative session for parents of students and also teachers. A special competition called 'Sanofi Pasteur Miss Beauty for Health 2013' was organised where each of the 23 finalists of the Pond's Femina Miss India 2013 contest partnered with a student from the school, to draw a poster on the theme of 'prevention is better than cure'.

Even today, ignorance about the need for immunisation leaves millions of children in India at risk of life-threatening diseases. So, in 2012, Sanofi Pasteur, a global leader in vaccines, and Miss India, launched the 'I for Immunisation' initiative inviting citizens to participate by sharing their ideas on spreading awareness about immunisation. Consequently, the 'Sanofi Pasteur Miss Beauty for Health' sub-contest was instituted to highlight the importance of building awareness on health issues.

Dr Stephan Barth, Country Head of the vaccine group in India, said, "The way forward for us is to implement the ideas that citizens have so enthusiastically contributed. We started the process in September 2012 by initiating a rural immunisation awareness programme in 52 villages along with NGO Child Rights and You (CRY). The recent school activity with GM International was also inspired by an idea we gathered last year. We are now exploring how best to work with schools for awareness on disease prevention, in urban and semi-urban areas.

At the event, the PFMI finalists were seen enthusiastically bonding with the students. Priyanka Mehrotra, principal of the school said, We are extremely happy to partner in this initiative. Our school caters to children from diverse backgrounds, and having worked closely with parents and communities in the vicinity, we believe that much remains to be done in immunisation awareness even in urban areas.

The Miss India finalists were carefully evaluated for their demonstration of understanding, conviction and confidence to become an ambassador for health, by a panel of judges, including eminent pediatricians Dr Bhaskar Raju and Dr Sridhar Ganapthy from Chennai and Mumbai respectively, Sanmita Kamat from CRY, Sanofi Pasteur Miss Beauty for Health 2012 Farah Hussain, and Dr Rohit Arora, Medical Director, Sanofi Pasteur India. Dr Ganapathy, while training the finalists on the basics of immunisation earlier in the day, said, Most of us are able to lead healthy lives because of the protection that we have been offered against diseases such as diphtheria, polio, whooping cough and others. We all need to work together to ensure that lack of awareness does not become a hurdle in immunisation efforts.

Finally, the panel unanimously chose Anannya Sarmah as the winner of the contest, who, said Dr Raju impressed the judges with her eagerness to understand the concept, and the way she translated her learnings into her work with her student partner. A beauty who works for health needs to have what it takes to mobilise the masses for the cause of health issues such as immunisation.

The 'I for Immunisation' journey continues as Sanofi Pasteur India and the Miss India team stand committed to continued work with diverse groups in a unified effort to spread greater awareness about immunisation in India.
